How often should my piano be tuned?

Piano manufacturers recommend 3 to 4 tunings during the first year while the strings adjust to their tension and the parts settle in their new environment.  After that , a minimum of 2 tunings per year is ideal.  A piano that goes beyond a year without tuning may require additional tuning work to bring it back to pitch.  This is referred to as a “pitch raise” or “tension adjustment.”

What is A440?

This is the standard frequency for the A tone above middle C.  It is a standard used by orchestras and musicians world wide.  This standard allows instruments to be played in tune with each other.

Why do pianos go out of tune?

The piano's strings are under a combined tension of about 20 tons! Its sound board and bridges and many other parts are made of wood that expands and contracts with changes in humidity.  It will gradually go out of tune without even being played, due to changes in the environment.

Can the action or touch of my piano be

improved?

The action of a piano refers to the mechanical parts that respond to your touch, causing the hammers to hit the strings.  The touch is most responsive and consistent when these parts are in correct alignment.  Periodically,  regulation is necessary to maintain this relationship.

Can the tone be adjusted?

Tone can be brightened or mellowed through hammer shaping and various techniques referred to as "voicing." The room has a large effect on the tone as well, and drapes, rugs and furniture can all affect the sound.

Where should the piano be placed?

The piano should be kept away from heating or air conditioning vents, fireplaces, and areas with drafts or high exposure to humidity.  An outside wall of the home is okay if it is well insulated.
